DCAS

I went to DCAS today to get a copy of my scantron. While I was there I asked a few questions to (2) DCAS personnel who seemed somewhat intelligent. I know everyone is gonna bite my head off for this but I wanted to relay the information I received. Argue it wrong all you want say whatever about civil service law etc but this is what I was told today by both DCAS exam section and certification section.
First I asked can there be (2) lists out at the same time? I have heard a bunch of different things. They said:
Two lists CAN be out at the same time, (1) they hire off of and (1) made public, meaning they DO NOT have to wait til the last list is exhausted to make a new list from our test available to the public. Although they can only promote from (1) list at a time. They said our list can come out while the other list is active, ours would be considered just public not active.
Second, I asked would they wait to promote from our list til the people on the last list reached their fifth year in January.
They said it could go either way, depending on the demand for sgt's etc. They also stated that there is nothing saying they have to wait til those officers reach their fifth year to hire off our list because according to DCAS you have to be ELIGIBLE, meaning five years or more. Not sure exactly what that means but that was the information I was given at 1 Centre 14th floor.
I know everyone's gonna say no way are they putting our list out before the other one is exhausted after january etc but thought I'd share.
Good luck everyone.

You answered your own question with the statement that preceeded it. YOU CAN ONLY PROMOTE FROM ONE LIST AT A TIME. There were obviously some misunderstandings, a list can be made public and not established, which is what happend with the current LT's list, their list had been made public but not established so the four year countdown hasn't started yet, due to the overage in that rank. No one said your list couldn't be made it just couldn't be established. What's the rush you would still have to wait for the current list to be exhausted, especially for those on your list who don't have 5 yet.

The PC can hire Provisional Sergeants based on RAW score. It happened once before, about 10 years ago.

MN50 had you read my entire post it said DCAS stated there is nothing obligating them to wait til the other guys reach their 5th year, You have to be ELIGIBLE they said, as they state on the application. Everyone thought they couldnt put our list out til the other one is exhausted, but they can, its considered a public list. Even if they dont start hiring off it atleast we will know our place on the list a little sooner.
Whats the rush? come on guy! You hit your fifth year in july right? Your on the old list, upper 190's you said right?  Arent you hoping for a BMOC class in july as soon as you reach your fifth year? Your anxious too. WE ALL ARE! Especially those in their fifth year already.
Like I said argue my post all you want its the information I was given directly.

I'm not trying to argue with you irish but apparetly you did not read my post. I'll make it easier and highlight the main points where we are in agreement.

There were obviously some misunderstandings, a list can be made public and not established, which is what happend with the current LT's list, their list had been made public but not established so the four year countdown hasn't started yet, due to the overage in that rank. No one said your list couldn't be made it just couldn't be established.

Perhaps because I used the word made instead of writing made public you were confused, but that is what I meant, so don't get your panties in a bunch.  Again, you still have to wait even if it is made public.  And no I am not in a rush, I'm enjoying my time as a cop, the only reason I took the test was for the pay hike.  If we were compensated fairly as police officers I would not take the promotion, but that is obviously never going to happen.  You made it, why be anxious.  The more you think about it the longer it seems to become that you are waiting for what you want.  Relax, enjoy your time as a cop, it will come.

Hey everyone. A friend of mines spoke to a P.O. who works at the academy he states that everyone who passed this exam will get hired. It does not matter if your appointment date was Jan. 2005. The fact of the matter is that we all need to have faith in God. The way I see it is every six months hundreds of Sgt.'s are leaving after 20 years also every six months new police officers are being hired not to mention that only a small percentage of cops are passing these exams. I feel this test was not difficult for a reason, it was ment for a large number of cops to pass it so they could have people to fill the spots. To those who did not do so good let's have faith that our test will have a large number of throw out's as well as double answers.

That's the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it.  It's harsh to call those two stupid for no reason, considering you can't form a grammatically correct sentence.  How do they know "friend of MINES," means your partner, no one can read minds here.

Many said: "I got an 80%.........SOOoooooOOOOOooo relieved. Now I can get on with my life again. "

From how you make it sound Many this test wasn't so easy. You claim to have given "6 months of my life away" just to get an 80%, or was it in the high 80's or was it an 85%. Whatever it was you are a posting contradiction. Everytime you post I thank God that I passed and that I will never have to take orders from an ignorant, kool-aid drinking, lying piece of **** like yourself.
With that said, be safe out there.

jaggedj, I appreciate everyone's contributions to the site, particularly yours. The point I was making was referring to all of the back and forth. The many insults to another was getting a little crazy and you guys semmed to be getting angry. That to me, is unnecessary because if we feel like anyone on this board is a jackass then so be it. I didn't understand all the drama. To my own defense, even if the other guy was being insensitive and utterly ridiculous; I don't give sh_t. I'm easy, people's insults don't bother me. I will protest the best I can with the info I have and that's all I can do but, I gonna defifinitely try for my 2 points because, I do F#%#!# deserve it.

Judee80, i hope you and everyone, including me, get those questions. I passed the sergeants test once before and the list was cut off close to sixty names away from my list number. Now on this one, i need a few questions and I think I deserve it too, for being cut off from the test list I was cut off. Good luck to everyone and God bless! KEEP THE FAITH!!

I didn't study all that much, and I passed. It is passable if you work in a busy command (not radio run busy but a command that has variety) and study a little.

You don't need a 100, you only need a 70.

4 tests ago, a 59 made the list, that is why the lists were so big. Most people that failed the last test failed with a score that ranged from 60 to 70, a score that normally placed you on the list. 3 tests ago, they made 70 the passing score.

So in agreement a 70 is not easy to get if we were to compare the last 3 tests..... 600 list 300 list and a possible 400 list with 5,000 people taking it.

BIG RED, I could not agree with you more. I don't know how long most of you have on the job but, these tests have changed tremendously and I came on in 96. Why do they seem so hard now? Obviously, the direction of the exams have changed. There was a time when the exams concentrated on patrol functions (things you need to know). Things like juveniles, property, aideds, accidents, prisoners and such. NOW, they want you to send everyone to freaking counseling and ask a bunch of quality of life questions, like about the graffitti reward program. TRUST ME, the exams have changed a lot. Also, keep in mid the PG has almost doubled in the last fifteen years.

Hello All, was at headquarters today 03/25/08, and spoke to a "person" at who said that there is a very good likely hood that the last class of Sgt's from this current list will be in July when a certain number makes 5 years.  A new list looks like it maybe established in late September and start calling off of that list as early as October of '08.  Those who are currently waiting for eligibility in January '09 will not make it.  This person stated that Chief Pinero needs SGT...A.S.A.P. That waiting till Jan. '09 was not feasible at this time, and that there is an EXTREME likely hood that they will not, again, will not, call all the eligible candidates on this current SGT list. Word has it , they are in desperate need of bosses.  The needs of the Department dictate.biggrin.  This has been done before in the past where they needed bosses and instead of waiting for , what ?, 6 months! They went and esatblished a new list of elligibles and just started calling off of that list rather than wait.. MONTHS!!!..DOES NOT LOOK GOOD...do not put your eggs in one basket thinking they are actually going to entertain WAITING months for just some guys so that they can make there 5 years.. not happening.. and I strongly suspected that they were not going to wait.. when they have a fresh batch.. and they desperately need bosses..NOW..

I heard from a very credible source that there will be a b moc class in may with a huge class in
July. there will be 20 holdovers due to lack of time on. our list will be established in JUNE and they will start hiring off our list in sep/oct. this is what I heard and I believe this info is true!
