I heard that Commissioner Bratton stated at the Police Academy meeting the other day that XOs would be getting Cat 2 cars. I know it was mentioned earlier and I was told that it would not be a Cat 2 but a Cat 3 car. (so the XO would have a car to utilize in lieu of the CO giving cars to specialty units). But then I heard that it is actually going to be Cat 2. Anyone hear the same?

I heard the same. Decent if you live in the city. Nothing special if you live upstate or LI

What I don't get is what if 10 xo's live in the 68 precinct. They're all parking their cars there? That'll never work.

Not to mention the dozens of XOs that live on LI who would need to park at the 105...that is impossible.

i have a feeling that these cars would not be parked at the precincts,,,but then someone would screw up
and then inspections,IAB etc would form special details with new forms and logs and command log entries to
ensure full compliance..

Cat 2's....get parked at police facility

Yes, granted. Obviously required by procedure (obviously no deviation possible from the police facility), I meant to convey was logistically a potential nightmare. Most cmds (as i am sure everyone can attest) barely have enough parking for their own personnel. Unless I have to cross a toll bridge to get to my cmd I'll just leave the cat 2 at my cmd and avoid the headache.

If you can park at any dept facility (i.e. Narcotics, Highway)maybe cars can be spread out more so there would be no problem.

Unless my tour starts and ends when I get in and out of the cat 2 car, doesn't do much good for me (Rockland) If you live in Staten Island, however, hugely beneficial.

Yes Lew. I see those satellite cmds (narco/hwy, etc) being beneficial in this respect, depending on their parking restraints/constrictions, and particularly the disposition of the house CO, who can impose limitations as to how many extra XO cars (who don't serve him/her any purpose) are going to be allowed to park at their facility. Not to mention community gripes (where applicable) about limited on-street parking, which is always a point of contention in the pct commands. A majority of Captains are XOs (roughly 200 give or take-according to the current Dept directory-rough estimate) so 200 cars (even when spread out) can add up quick. The city residents won't have much of an issue here, but I see the resident county people having more of an issue here, because there aren't too many cmds (even support ones) that border the outskirts.
But the Cat 2s are definitely a good thing taking all things into consideration.
(Personally if it were me I would have fixed the schedules and days off instead, but that's just my perspective)

Also, some people may just leave it at their permanent command. Depending on where you live it may not be worth to pick up a cat 2 car and drive that to work

Confused!!!!
So the whole re-egineering for the Captain/XO rank: only change is a Cat II vehicle????
That's horrible, rather duty schedule, RDO be re-adjusted

As of now there is no change in that department. In the PC's own words, it is a "rite of passage."

wow i figured the academy, ftu, and dedicating around 2,500 hours of free time to pass three exams would have satisfied the whole rite of passage thing.

Not to mention working an hour for free everyday for the past however many years.
