I keep hearing different answers as to how many years in the rank of sgt you need to have before you can be promoted to lt. Is it 2 or 3 years?

Its two. All the answers your looking for are on the LT's notice of exam
It's time in rank. Your time on doesn't matter any more. And it's 2 years to be promoted. It used to be 3. I don't think this is really a concern yet considering the present LT list has at least a year minimum left and they haven't announced a test yet.
