There's currently 104 pass overs. Of the 104, 64 are passed over for not having enough time leaving 40 people potentially jammed up. It's hard to say how many of those 40 are passed over for jam up reasons but if I had to guess I'd say 25-30 are jammed up.

Also have to take into account, Im sure some of the guys on that list don't have enough college credits. Most likely military or just some people that need 4 credits. Plus someone on here said that there were some people waiting for their detective shields from narco etc. so they were deferring until that happens, not sure if thats accurate though.

Yes it is true there are many on the list who are deferring waiting to make detective so they can go straight to top pay SGT. I know 5 personally within the current pass overs

I always thought that if you were a 3rd Grade Detective in your first year you only go to step 2 sergeant ?? I didn't think a 3rd grade 1st step Detective goes straight to top pay sergeant upon promotion. Am I wrong ?

Newly promoted detectives skip three years of pay increases. It takes 1 year to top pay. Detectives that have held rank for over a year go straight to top pay. Yes it's worth it and yes a bunch of guys are deferring it for the money....

wrong wrong wrong!!!! you jump to the next highest pay scale!! if youre detective for one month, you dont go to top pay!! you might go to 2nd or 3rd year sgt pay....not an automatic to top pay!

Hey delayed63:
Detectives have the following salary steps to top pay:
If Det. after 3/31/2006 If Det. prior to 3/31/2006 Current Sgt's Pay scale Expired 7/31/11
$77,595 $82,003 $79,763
$77,820 $82,198 $79,984
$78,045 $82,395 $80,147
$78,300 $82,591 $81,326
$78,558 $87,278 $98,072
$78,607
$83,802
$84,365
$87,278
In order to figure out what pay scale you will be at upon being promoted to Sgt, you have to find out at what step you are currently and give yourself the next pay raise as a Sgt. For example, a Det. promoted after 3/31/06 in his FOURTH year as a Det, will be a Sgt with making $79,763 and will take 4 years to top pay just like every other PO. The only ones that will be going STRAIGHT to top pay really are Det's that have a minimum of 6 years in rank.

If you NOT a top pay cop and you make detective then it 8 steps ( starting the day you get made and for the next 7 years you get raises) or if you ARE a top pay cop then its only 3 steps( the day you get made then raises for the next 2 years).

Whats up everyone. That detective contract your referring to is the old one. The DEA updated their contract with the DEA Contract reopener. Third Grade Detectives have a three step pay scale before they reach top pay, which is 2 years after they recieve their shield.

In class they said that detectives no matter where their at in pay will go straight to top pay because of their contract.

Exactly, even if they have one day in rank. I figure I'll throw in the new DEA pay scale to support what you said earlier.

It's pretty messed up that Det has such a quick jump from PO, but Sgt is barely a raise at all for 4 years. I have yet to hear a good explanation as to why Sgts basically make cop money for so long after we have been promoted.

Its to maximize your eventual top pay so that when you retire you have the largest possible pension. The SBA said they could of negotiated for less steps to top pay but that would of lowered top pay thereby lowering your pension.

Yeah I remember the explanation from BMOC, but I don't agree with it. The bigger jumps don't seem to lower Det pay too much do they? I understand not getting it all at once, but the piddling raises for 4 years until almost all of it kicks in make getting promoted a tough decision, and a hard burden once you are.
I was promoted in the first class of this test. Every top pay cop in my squad made more than me this year, a few by a mile. I'm fairly certain that they will beat me every year until I get to that last step. There's another effect to this stretch out: it forces some SGTs to kiss a$$ to get OT, something I never did and won't do now.

problem with paid detail to me is....DOESNT count toward your pension! and frankly, the way they treat you like youre a POS. You know what, i worked for you, so pay me! if only it was that easy, you cant contact the vendor, you have to go through paid detail. NONSENSE, i absolutely refuse to do it. Go to a busy house, they usually all do impact OT. Youll get the OT eventually. I did all this OT With sandy and i never wanted any of it. And airborne, in the long run you will be MUCH better off then these cops. You gotta stop thinking short term. Think about it, would you stay on this job over nassau county bc the city pays you 40 k in the academy while nassau pay you 25k??? i hope not! in the long run you will make more in nassau and it will be the same as a sgt. DONT FORGET, you also get the chance to move up to LT where a cop cant!

Obviously long term it's better, that's what ultimately made my decision. But it was tough. I had exactly 10 years as a cop, so I took a hit getting promoted for now. I know some people can take it easier than others, but with 2 kids and a mortgage, I'm not one of them. :(

This is a distant race....not a sprint. You will be ahead of the regular cop by a long shot at the end of that race....trust me! Ace the LTS test if there is one in 2014...and you may even get to top pay in 3 years instead of waiting the entire 4.

Does anyone know if you are jammed up and lose a court case does the job start the process of G015, dept charges and getting restored right after the case or if you are appealing a court decision do they wait until the appeal is over? Because if they restore you and give you 30 and a year and you end up winning an appeal can"t you then fight the job penalty?
