New Longevity for a 5+ PO will be about $211 a check. And for a Sgt with same time 5+ will only be $185??? what a joke...

A person with 5 years on and makes sergeant should just be grateful they have a great jump start on their career and pay structure. And to those detectives that are on the list, I hope your current salary, no matter what step you are on, is higher than the sergeants starting salary by the time you get called so you can jump to top pay. Its sweet. No waiting 4 steps to top pay. To all on the list: BE PATIENT. All your time WILL come. Its even more sweeter when you get the message at 1700 hours on that awesome Wednesday evening.
Congratulations to all. AND stay safe.

Could someone please advise exactly how much money do you bring home as a new sgt. I have an idea but i am not so great with math. I want to buy a home soon and I need to know exactly what I can afford because I may be a sgt. soon. I'm on 2009 list. Thanks for anyone's help.

your looking at 3,300 or so before taxes with longevity.. depending on your deductions they'll probably take out a nice chunk in taxes somewhere around 900-1000 bucks and there you have it taking home approx 2200-2300 a pay period if your not in deferred comp or ITHP

Lets see less than 3 yrs in rank, plenty of overtime (only when i want it ) ton of chart days and make over 100,000k. But i rather get ordered in on my days off, get stuck with collars when i want to go home and get denied days off. Some may want to justify that being a cop is better and to some it is, however you cannot speak for all. At the very least its one step closer to Lt. and when you retire you can market yourself just a little better (if you choose to work)

To each their own....
but like I said I do minimal amount of ot but I will again make over 100 grand....
that's not bags of collars or going out there and killing myself...
But I will have to wait 3 years after I make boss to really get close to 100,000...
People on here talk about being a cop and getting ordered in on their day off....that's true and it sucks....but what do they do to the sgts?
Tour change them so they are working the same tour as you but without the ot...
Again, I just look at sgt as a stepping stone to lt...I really don't see too much advantage over being a cop...
But that's my opinion...
Peace.

Hey Mike, You are 100 % right. Different situations for different people. I was in Brooklyn North the first half of my career. Having to interact with savages. Part of my tenure was 2 and a half years in Narcotics with the nastiest of the nastiest. Enough was enough for me. I studied my a$$ off for the 2008 exam and was fortunate enough to pass. I got promoted and the benefits for me was that there was no more having to be pressured for summons or collars. No more sergeants that do not know what they are doing to tell me what to do. No more handling of smelly, disqusting, winter cold snot dripping, dried white foam on the side of the mouth having, 4 day old eye crust having, 10 day old morning breath having, AIDS infested, filled colostomy bag throwing savage beasts to sit on in the hospital, sit with and walk through at central booking or process. Not to mention putting my hands through things where I risk getting stuck, cut or poked with whatever these scum of society have in there pockets. AND the crappiest hours in Narco with the crapiest days off. I do have to say that overtime does depend on what command you go to. When I was promoted, I was sent to a extremely slow pct, but I did make o.t. with CRV and "supervising arrest processing", it does add up. Contracts change, pay increases. The sergeant rank should be viewed as what lifestyle YOU want of it. Thats my opinion and I am sticking to it...lol Good luck to all and whatever you all decide. AND STAY SAFE OUT THERE.

Offensive??? What is offensive ?? I can't call the perps I had to interact with animals. THAT is insulting to dogs, cats, mice and the rest of the animal kingdom. AND if you get offended by the term savage, then you are not cut out to be on this job. How can another cop rely on you to back them up if the sh%& hits the fan?? You are offended by a word. I too spent the first half of my career in Brooklyn North and before in the USMC. The fact you are so bothered by someone taking offense to your racist and close minded perspective on those who live in Brooklyn is disturbing. You shouldn't be a supervisor let alone a cop if you view people who simply live in a section of the city as "savages". As for your comment about the streets....Whether it has been in Iraq or Brooklyn, I handled them just fine. Thinking the way you do does not make one tough it makes you weak and mindless. You should conduct yourself more professionally.

Not to put words in anyones mouth but i dont think Wile's use of the word "savages" was directed at any specific race or neigborhood but at the crack-heads, junkies and drug dealers of the world. Any cop who puts their hands on people has encountered a "savage" and the term is not reserved for any one type of person or demographic area. And yes, the phrase can obviously be used in an offensive manner, but thats just not what i took from the context...

I have to put my two cents into this one:
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a ducks, acts like a duck, what would you call it? A Duck.
As per Oxford English Dictionary:
savage (sav·age)
Pronunciation:/savij/
adjective
(of an animal or force of nature) fierce, violent, and uncontrolled:
tales of a savage beast
a week of savage storms
cruel and vicious; aggressively hostile:
they launched a savage attack on the budget
(chiefly in historical or literary contexts) primitive; uncivilized
(of a place) wild-looking and inhospitable; uncultivated
(of something bad or negative) very great; severe:
this would deal a savage blow to the government's fight
noun
(chiefly in historical or literary contexts) a member of a people regarded as primitive and uncivilized
a brutal or vicious person:
the mother of one of the victims has described his assailants as savages
verb
[with object]
(especially of a dog or wild animal) attack ferociously and maul:
ewes savaged by marauding dogs
subject to a vicious verbal attack; criticize brutally:
Fowler savaged her in his next review
Derivatives
savagely
adverb
savageness
noun
Origin:
Middle English: from Old French sauvage 'wild', from Latin silvaticus 'of the woods', from silva 'a wood'
I'm pretty sure there are several people in this world that fit this definition. Look up the definition of a meaning before passing judgement on how it's offensive. This word can be said about any color/race. For those that take it the wrong way open your minds and stop acting like its you against the world. The definition is from the English Oxford dictionary, look it up and be enlightened. If you feel the word is still offensive after actually understanding the meaning do something about it and write to Oxford dictionary about how degrading the word savage is.

i also have to agree with wileone he never mentioned anyhing about skin color and if he worked in brooklyn north as a patrol cop and in narcotics then yes most of the people he had interactions with were perps. not to say that everyone in bn is a perp but when do we have run in with doctors and teachers or priest ??? well i guess the occasional doctor taking advantage of patients while they were drugged the hot teacher sleeping with the lucky stupid 15 yo that couldnt keep the secret and the priest with the candy in his pocket . err sorry got side track wat was i saying oh wileone never mention as a race and in brooklyn north it is very culturally diverse. althought i must say the topic in this forum was sgt contract so if someone want to start taliking about savages then they should start a new topic

Since when did cops start defending perps??? The Sgt. was obviously stating that Perps from Brooklyn North as well as anywhere else are savages. I cant beleive anyone would think different and anyone who feels the need to defend the word savage should have another background check done. How did any of you guys relate that word to racism when he never mentioned anyone except perps??? Who is really being the over sensetive one now. Some people here automatically related the word savage with some type of race or another so thats on you, not him. Untill then, you better have each others back and stop the nonsense. I understand that all he was saying is that its better to supervise than to do the grunt work which can be dirty sometimes.

Savage is not a term I like, but some people are what they are....and it isn't about race...I know many black and hispanic cops who refer to many of these perps as savages...
I can't believe how sensitive some people are....

I never understood why a cop would ever side with a perp. I don't want to make a broad statement but i noticed a lot of guys that came out in 2006 are very perpy; they defend a lot of the "Urban survival techniques" that the savages in Brooklyn North have honed.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me...I think that was the 25k class if im not mistaken.
