Here is another 3 year wonder who doesnt know how the job and exams work... read below...
The 2008 list came out last September because the 2007 list had no one eligible to be promoted until January! So instead of the dept not hiring anyone from sept - jan they published the 2008 list.
The way civil service exams go in this dept the list is established when the prior list is almost finished or when the prior exams list has been out four years. If it takes three more years, since the 2008 list was out a year already, to finish that list then the 2009 list wont be out until three years from now.
But considering the 2008 list has about 290 names left, it should be finished in spring of 2010, when the 2009 list should be coming out.
The dept doesnt kill lists early, before its full four years, for no reason just to move onto the next list. Either a list is exhausted and a new list comes out or a list goes a full four years from when its published before a new one comes out. This how every sgt, lt, and capt, exam has been running for YEARS.
And why hasnt a sgt exam been announced for next year, hmm? Because the dept doesnt need one because they have enough sgts eligible for YEARS. So relax people...

Let's all play nice here. We are all anxious for the 09 list to come out. The 09 list will come out when the 08 list is or almost exhausted. Bloomberg just announced that there will be a January class of recruits which is good. (Albeit a very small one) More rookies, more Sgts needed.
In the past, when the test was graded on a curve, they killed the lists. (I don't really want a guy that scored a 50 to be my boss, I'm sorry) Since the passing score is 70, I don't foresee them killing the lists early until everyone gets promoted. The lists are good for 4 years from the date the lists are created. Since there is a high turnover of Sgts, I believe everyone will get promoted off of the lists. I could be wrong, but I truly don't believe that people will die on the list. (As stated in previous posts, I don't have a hook, and my uncle isn't Comissioner Kelly. This is just an educated guess.)

Why are they stepping it up? At the current rate the 08 list won't be exhausted until May/June so what's the rush?

Called the dcas number 2126691357 plugged in exam number and it said the list has been made public but not yet established so there for can't be used for appointments. Then I called back and the message was this list has not been established. Don't know if it was a glitch or what but figured I throw it here for you all to ponder.

As per the Daily News a few weeks ago, I believe that we are getting federal money to boost transit security. They said there was enough money for only 100 cops. Now I don't know if that is 100 more to a number they had in mind or only 100 total. I thought they said that there wasn't going to be any classes next year because of the budget problems but because of the federal money, we were going to have 100 cops for transit. I believe that the classes and thus promotions will be going slowly.

This list will still be out early 2010 when the 2008 list is close to being exhausted.
If the hirings/economy keep up like this, i can see this list going the full 4 years, meaning the next SGT exam would be in 2011 or 2012.

Ok a class of 60 is going in Monday. So that brings the current list to 460 or so, leaving about 210 left on the current list. The question is how many people does their need to be remaining on the current list before they release our list? Is that what they go by to determine when they put out the new list? I think last year there were about 80 on the previous list before they released the current one. Think its gonna be around the same time? Anyone?

I don't believe that we can use previous years as precedent as to the promotions of sgts. because of the crap economy. I believe that it will be slow and at best there will be promotions every other month of between 50-60 people for sgts. In the papers, the mayor (or PC?) said that because we were getting screwed out of federal funding, we were going to reduce the NYPD headcount by 1000 through attrition. The less cops we have, the less sgts we need.
I do have a little hope though.... The mayor stated that if he were to get re-elected, (pretty much all but certain at this point) he would reduce crime by a further 15 percent. What I think will happen is that what the city is waiting for in terms of hiring is the passing of the new 25 and 50 pension tier. When that happens, (and I believe it will most likely happen for all new hires) you will see large classes of 1000 - 2000 recruits like in the 80's. With all of those cops, you will need a lot of sgts. (This is a guess, so please do not take it as gospel. Just my mind working overtime.) Until that happens, you will see sgts get hired in dribs and drabs promotion will be painfully slow.

I'm not dreaming at all. It was the Mayor that stated that he wanted a 15 percent crime reduction. On top of that, we are about 5-6000 people below our all time high of police manpower and our manpower is getting lower. I really believe that one of the main reasons for them not really hiring is because of the pension. Once they pass the 25 year 50 year old pension tier, they will start hiring lots of cops. Also, since there isn't much left for us to give up, watch top pay go up to 6 years or even 7 years for new hires. (It's already at 5.5 years) Bloomdouche is waiting for cheaper cops so he can secure his 15 percent crime reduction through cheaper cops and CONstat.

I don't foresee a spike in hires until 2011 and even then i don't see it being as much as it was in the past. However, I'm pretty sure Bloombum wants to continue to do more with less. So get used to the low manpower.

This list will be out sometime early next year, im guessing March, when the old list is one or two classes away from being exhausted.
That way as soon as the old list is exhausted they can hire off the new one.
And i dont foresee anything changing with hirings/manpower in the near future.
I think every other month bmocs are around for a while and the 2009 list might actually run its full 4 year cycle, like the LTs and CAPTs exams. That means the 2009 list would run to about 2014...

They should make a 2009 list public for some time before 2008 gets depleted because they need time to adjust the list if anyone makes any disputes regarding extra points or for any other problems that might arise.
