What makes a good boss? I ask this because more than a few people on this site will be bosses in the near future. So I ask this and any input you may have would be greatly appreciated. I have 15 years on this job, on patrol and no I have never been a house mouse ( no offense) and I have had the pleasure and misery to work with some winners. My definition of a good boss is the following 1) make a decision and stick to it, please do not ask me what I think, all the time. That only makes me think you are not sure, very uncool. We know you are nervous but make a decision.2) Treat your people the way you want to be treated, remember a boss is only as good as his/her cops.3) Stick by your people, when you give then an order and it is a mess, do not throw them under the bus to save your butt.4) If you are not sure about a situation ask the senior cop, he/ she will hopefully know what to do, but not all the time.5) Do not brag how many collars you did make because we can check to see how good or bad you were as a cop.5) Remember how it was when you were a cop and the boss was a winner, try your best not to act like that.6) Everything is not solved with green paper or charges. You can discipline without taking money out a cops pocket.7) Sometimes you may have to protect your cops from their own worst enemy, themselves. Well that is my thought on what makes a good cop. Hey with 15 years on and a few hundred arrest from anti crime, it is time to make boss.By the grace of the God I passed this exam see you brothers and sisters in BMOC, in two months. Stay safe and always watch the hands. Mistakes on paperwork can be corrected, not mistakes on tactics

Thats pretty much everything in a nut shell, except I have to disagree with #5 to a certain degree. You definately should not brag about collars, thats gay, but the number of collars you have are not a measure of how good or bad of a cop you were or are. I know plenty of guys who are complete retards and are terrible cops, inept on patrol, dont back other cops and constantly **** other cops, but have lots of collars, it doesnt take much to slap cuffs on people.

If it seems like I was bragging that I owe an apology, because collars mean nothing if you are first class jerk to your people. As for the typo with 5 my mistake.

Dont sweat it, not saying you're bragging, just saying collars dont say everything about a cop.

I have ten years on and have seen a few bosses NOT lead by example. If you ask your cops to do something, don't do the opposite yourself ( stand outside at a detail and you sit on your a-- the whole time ). Try to remember the good bosses and how you felt working for them as cop.

Just my 2 cents!
