Was in the Daily News yesterday, most couldnt read it without a subscription
A city spokeswoman said the 12-hour shift proposal at the heart of the issue is a small-scale, one-year pilot program that would affect approximately 50 sergeants.
It is unfortunate, the spokeswoman said, that the Sergeants Benevolent Association continues to hold up raises for 5,000 sergeants, and is trying to negotiate in the press rather than coming to the table to reach an agreement for a good contract that includes a limited pilot program consistent with tours that many police officers are already working as part of a pilot program negotiated with the Police Benevolent Association .
-- Edited by NYM on Monday 7th of April 2025 03:16:28 PM
great catch we have any idea who this spokeswoman is making these claims.
Can the thousands of Sergeants paid less than cops show up and get some tips as caddies? We can work for the Sergeants who make 20% more than us who were promoted a few months ago.

I can say without a doubt that I believe the citys statement. I believe they asked for a 50 person pilot and the SBA denied it. Since they read this forum Im curious to see if they address that statement from the city. The SBA has not gained back my trust since Mullins. Its embarrassing that the city attorneys are doing laps around Vinny and his lawyers.

Voting 162-0 on these tours is horse shit because there would be AT LEAST one command of SGTs that will accept it. SBA dont represent us, they represent their own best interests not everyones. Including when you ask them for any contract information, which is just insane to me. If they dont want the position, nobody is forcing them. Shout out to some of the good delegates out there that actually care. But its few and far between.

So this is what I think is happening, based on combining info from a few different reliable sources:
Vinny is obviously panicking to settle the contract before June 1st when top pay Detective Specialists and 3rd graders will start making more than top pay Sergeants (119k vs. 118k). Hence all the recent media appearances.
SBA gave up on arguing that the 1200 "fringe" Sergeants should be retro'd to top pay as of July 2023 when POs started going to top pay Sergeant. They've settled on retroing the 1200 to top pay as of December 2024 (3 months ago).
Obviously this means that the recently promoted Sergeants will receive retro at a top pay rate from the moment they were promoted, and a lot of their retro payments will be significantly higher than the 1200 fringe Sergeants in addition to the fact that they have been making top pay this entire time. This is not their fault, and I don't blame them for benefiting from this unions unbridled ineptitude.
I'll be voting no, because my Union failed to negotiate in my best interest, and instead negotiated to the benefit of senior Sergeants (who put us in this position to begin with) and newly promoted Sergeants (who will vote yes on everything for the rest of their careers because they skipped all the steps).
All of the rest of you guys in the 1200 with me, I totally respect/understand you voting yes. The 97k is fucking us and another 2 years of it will cause more irreparable financial damage. It doesn't really matter, the contract will pass overwhelmingly even if all 1200 of us voted no.
But, at least the no votes will more accurately reflect this unions failure to represent their members (unlike the 163 one-way delegates who voted no to 12 hour tours without surveying their members).
Note for when I inevitably see a screenshot of this in one of the SBA WhatsApp groups I'm in: This is not confirmed, it's just what I'm fairly certain is going to happen after collecting information.

The 1-2 year Sgt receiving a bigger retro then a 3-4 year Sgt is the ultimate kick in the nuts, and the perfect way, only the SBA can put a cherry on top of this contract. "Omg, top Pay Sgts are making less then top pay 3rd grade Detectives, time to rush this now!"

I cant speak for all, I can speak for myself and many may be the same boat, but the financial hardship is extremely difficult & the dire need for a raise is undeniable. I wish I wasnt in the position I am in today, to do the same, because its incomprehensible how passing a 2017 exam & being promoted has led me to get paid less than 2022 exam Sgts. It makes me sick to my stomach how much I remember trying to convince Sgts at the time that the contract was horrible. I cringe knowing rookie Sgts will nearly double my retro. But, it comes a point where you stop worrying about everyone else & re-focus on myself & my best interests, and getting paid a reasonable salary is my best interest. I dont know when my list number will be called but I will swear on everything I love that Vincent will never have my vote of support. Pat Lynch took 7 years to settle a contract and I still had more faith in him. When I don that white shirt, Im going to get to know my SGTs, and if I have a SGT who struggled in the same boat as me, Im not saying there will be favoritism but there will be signs.

Meeting on Thursday, and we know this is read by the Union, along with many others- we're now over 1,800,000 views.
I have spent the better part of two decades waiting for contracts to be settled. Mostly the delay was caused by PERB processes and PBA tactics- which look brilliant in hindsight. What exactly is the PERB mediator doing here? We have an issue- 12 hour tours- which neither side is willing to budge on- allegedly, since somebody is lying about the "pilot program" being all that is on the table. I am no expert but that sounds to me like an impasse. Declare it and move on with the process- and hope that an arbitrator will fix everything in the next few years. Since it appears absolutely nobody wants to go through the entire PERB process- bring us line with all the people we supervise and consent to a pilot program and get this done.
I'm going to drop these links for how to file for Improper Practice in bargaining if either side is truly negotiating in bad faith here. Interestingly enough, it appears that this can be done by any union member. Laws defining improper practice also added.
Hoping for a substantive update and direct communication from leadership after Thursday's meeting. Enjoy the day off patrol and the spread we paid for. We will be at work, waiting while we supervise people who make a hell of a lot more than us, and have been for years.

These "front-line supervisors" who make up the board of officials are no longer working for the best interests of its members. Not being transparent or at least give updates for us to be informed so we're not just spiraling with all these wild "breaking news posts". Speaking to the media and not to your rank and file is counterproductive to unifing a group of people those at top pay and those who are not. Although were not in the room to hear these negotiations or what is actually the sticking points I doubt the SBA or PBA will ratify a contract anytime soon since we have the mayors election happening in November its going to be crunch time.
However speaking of elections I wonder how many of the 4k Sergeants live in the 5 boroughs? I would estimate it to be 50% and who is going to be be pandering for a measly 2k votes one way or the other without jumping onto another coalition whenever those members are up for renegotiation.
I just don't want this to drag any further to then eventually have to do the 12 hour tours, people don't need to be pawns for this pissing contest, all other unions have added the language of 12 hours tours in its MOA.
PERB is a worst case scenario they have 2 year agreement, unless were able to come to an agreement which hasn't been the case.

Meanwhile the CEA, LEA, DEA have contracts going into 2027
