I heard first hand from a few offices at puzzle palaces including omap that they dont know if they will get past the 1600 mark. But if there is a mass mass exodus then they will have to go further.

Nothing anybody in 1pp says about these lists matter. In 4 years from now, not a single boss of any of those offices will be in the same spot.
They'll promote people until the list is exhausted or expired. That's it.

Out of your mind. Civil service laws as pretty much set at 4yrs unless extenuating circumstances can be articulated as to why a list should be extended. If you scored low hope for the best but prepare for the worst.. No one should stress but be prepared if things dont go the way you hope

Ill forgive you as you sound young on the job but you are completely misinformed. Civil service LAW says the list is only good for 4 years. In the past 15 years no list has ever been extended past 4 years.

As of July 16, there are 130 sergeant vacancies (which includes allotment for SSA/SDS), and an additional 55 on terminal leave. You can attribute this to the recent LT promotions. I'd expect a back-to-back large class followed by a smaller one fairly soon, though that's just conjecture at this point.

How often are Sgts in BMOC promoted before their final day in BMOC, with those scheduled graduation dates it seems some classes would have the promotion ceremony weeks before they were actually finished with BMOC

As of August 2, there are 95 sergeant vacancies (which includes allotment for SSA/SDS), and an additional 55 on terminal leave.
Edit: Remember sergeant's are not promoted up front, so the current BMOC class can be subtracted from these vacancies. On paper, they won't count until officially promoted.

There is no set number for SGTs. Its all based on department needs
63ASAP said
Aug 8, 2018
Correct, in a sense. Though thats the case with every rank. Those needs are based on personnel allocation numbers (e.g., vacancies). I always mention that the department has wide discretion on promotion. If its in the budget they can go over vacancies or even not promote at all. Its merely an authorized headcount. Traditionally, its been a helpful guide, though.

I think once you get to the LT rank they have a pretty set number of personnel in rank give or take a few and that range Gets tighter and number of people in the rank obviously get smaller the higher you go. For instance most patrol, housing, transit pct you only have 6 LTs ( admin, ico, sol, pltn)

The only issue with Sgt Vacancy numbers is that there is no set number of Sgt for the NYPDLike there is for LTs and above. At any given moment the dept can say we dont need this many sgts and drastically reduce the number it wants. Its also tied to the number of cops that are in the department also. So it can fluctuate.
Overall its a good tool to gauge possible future promotions. But just because there are 70 vacancies does t mean theyll promote 70 cops to Sgt
