Any which way you look at it......It's a bosses job! I've been off patrol in a detail for 3 years now and yes you are treated a lot better than patrol, you still can't beat being a boss.

Phil Atio it all make sense now you have no patrol experience. No wonder your an immature little prick. Your the kind of guy who would put a senior guy on a doa and put a rookie in the sector. Your going to be a crappy Sgt, but I bet you can file the **** out of paperwork or write 20 summons a day. Someone with three years should not have a detail. Ok I'am done

I was just told the numbers for the next promotion will be:
13 Captains
42 Lieutenants
65 Sergeants
Hopefully with that many Lieutenants there will be a large November class for Sergeants.

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows if theres an offical list with the names of PO's that will be going in the next class. Also when does the notification come down ? Is there anything that can prevent anyone of us from getting promoted, like the unknown ?

Chronic sick, not enough credits, or modified.
As far as i know those are the only things that can stop you.
And notifications come down on the wednesday before bmoc, so its a five day heads up.

If youre passed over due to credits i believe you still have until the list expires/exhausted. I could be wrong...
The exam will be two years old in january. Plus you probably started studying a year before that. If you knew you needed the credits what the heck were you doing in the last three years?

do you really need patrol experience to be a good boss? all of the bosses I had on patrol actually sucked. it wasnt until i got into a detail that the quality of bosses actually went up. they knew how to take care of their guys, and they knew, in return, you wouldnt do anything foolish to get them or yourself jammed up.
guys like rumor mill, who are stuck on patrol have hook envy.

do you really need patrol experience to be a good boss?........the answer is....no .you need to be a normal person and remember to not break the rule mentioned in another forum...ill sum it up for you...dont be a fu%^&* buff and make collars for guys when no one is looking!!!
a good boss knows when to leave something open to the squad and go get coffee and when to take action....being on patrol for a while does help w this buffy syndrome..
thank you

Yes being a patrol cop is better then being a detail cop for experience. Does it supersede the most important item, common sense? No, but its very important.
A detail cop like a crime guy might know how to shake skels down for drug collar or how to toss a car for a gun but do they know how to handle a 5 car accident with multiple people going to the hospital? Or know how to send reliefs to a hospital post? Hospital? Is that the place those patrol cops go to sit on my skel walkthrough? Or know how to handle a stabbing or a robbery with rounds discharged by the perp? All they know how to do is canvass for the perp and if they dont find them go 98.
I have a five year wonder sgt from transit that had her first job of an rmp accident. She called a senior sgt and asked him if he can do it since shes never done a par before.
How can you be a sgt if you dont know how to handle a par or how to properly draw up a 61? Heck, some crime/summons guys dont even know that we changed to new dirs a few years ago...
Also, if youre a rookie sgt and you get called to the scene of a doa by a 6 month rookie cop, who has no clue, will you know what to do? Will the 10 summons a day sgt, whos trying to remember the procedure from the book and who is smelling his first doa, know what to do? Or will the patrol cop, whos handled 5 doas solo in his career have a better grasp of what to do?

brooklyn bacon, thanx for answering my question....im not on this 08 list anyway, but just curious how this list might flow....i agree with you n the lack of experience on some sgts prior work experience...this job doesnt really make sense the way people can get promoted, while only knowing how to write double parkers, or flirt with the sgts enough to get easy tours , while being able to study enough , n then get to a command, n not knowing **** what to do....my opinion, this job should require more than a 70 and 5 yrs on to be a boss, of new yorks finest....

Phil Atio Believe me, Iam not a hater. Ive been in a detail for years. And it seems to me you've been skating through this job because of your hook since you got on. You seem to be proud to ride someone elses wave. I know some people (hooks) myself and using them to get to a Pct i can understand but using them to get into a detail with 3 on is a mistake. You need to get out there and get hands on as a patrol cop to be a good Sgt. You seem to think a good boss is a guy who is cool and leaves you alone. I am not saying anyone wants a ball buster as a boss but being a Sgt by definition is someone with knowledge of not only the book but someone when they show up to a job they know how to handle it because they've been to hundreds just like it before. I gave up my detail and went back on patrol to do just that. Its not the uniform and the strips, its the knowledge and experience that makes you quaified.

Rumor Mill, FYI doing precinct conditions is not a detail.
I got off patrol and into a precinct-unit because of something I did while on patrol. I got to my first detail because of something I did while in that precinct-unit. I got to my second detail because of something I did while I was in that detail. I turned down a detail-sub-unit (detective track) because I didnt want to occupy a spot that someone who wanted it could take and get designated-detective 3rd, knowing I was going to be leaving for promo to Sgt.
Hook comment was tongue and cheek, although, I can guarantee if I wanted to go anywhere else, I could.
I just hope one day I am HALF the Sgt that you think you're gonna be.
