I heard a rumor that the department is planning to scrap the 12 hour tours because surveys show that 3/4 of the ones doing it right now hate it because the job is still hitting them for overtime on their swings.
If thats the case, then the SBA should be working harder to fix the pay disparity and stop worrying about the tours. If you are reading this SBA board - get this settled now

Heard that was a rumor the SBA started. 12 Hr tours is 100% happening department wide. Its going to significantly reduce overtime once the entire department is on it. You think the city is going to miss out on reducing overtime. On top of that its in the PBA's contract and the pba has to agree to shut it down for legitimate reasons.

I 100% agree with this. Its slated to save the city over 1 Billion $ a year on the NYPD budget. The city isnt going to drop it like that. The tours are happening its just a matter of when we settle.

Those numbers were calculated with a bigger department. Some of the pilot commands are getting slammed with rdo overtime. With recruit classes being cancelled. Its just not feasible to do without losing rdos.

Curious how the job likes that. I know I don't. IT just means even more disconnect between cops and bosses. They won't be building a report, it will be different bosses all the time.

Completely agree. I'm in early every day and basically doesn't change how my life outside the job. More days off, no real change to my daily life
12s would be absolutely miserable. I commute over an hour and a half each way. I'd be home just enough time to go to sleep and go right back in again. With young kids, there's no way I'd do 12s.

Seem to think if it becomes a think transit will be the go to for overtime still do 40-50 hours a month and have 7-9 rdos as sgt or Lieut not bad

If you are a patrol sergeant doing 12's you're going to be working 14 hour days or more, guaranteed. Coming in about an hour early to do the roll call, then you can't leave the same time as the cops do at the end of your shift, you still have to watch them scan out and sign off on 61's and collect DIRs. If you add in your commute, it could be even worse depending on where you live. 10 hour tours would be the best bet for a sergeant. I can't believe I am actually agreeing with the SBA on something regarding this contract.
Sucks that we won't get retro on all the months that we should have been at top pay (for those of us that are stuck at 97k), while they figure these tours out.

I blame the SBA for the retro on the months we should be at top pay. Every single day that passes is a failure on the SBA. Instead of fixing this RIGHT NOW to reduce the losses some of us will incur they are emailing about raffles and SBA merchandise discounts. They should be negotiating every single day until this is fixed. If a board member was in this pay disparity situation, this wouldve been settled by now.

Not for nothing but collecting DIR? watching cops sign out? Sign 61s? Either you havent been promoted yet to sergeant and reading the duties from the patrol guide or you never worked in a patrol setting. Those things do not happen. 12 hour tours will be whatever the exact amount of hours will be.

The real issue here, no matter how you manage your day, is I could make roughly 30k more a year and walk in, stand roll call as a cop and go out and be a complete 0 with no responsibilities. Instead I have to come in early, check the roll call, see whos day Im going to ruin because were below minimum manning and I need to hold someone from the previous tour. And thats on top of BWC monthly reviews, Perfs and all the other garbage that comes with being a supervisor. All for 97k! Table the tours and fix the pay disparity!

Haven't done patrol in a long time but you don't make sure all your cops come back to the base before you sign out? If they are not at the base by their EOT, I call them to make sure they are good before I sign out and get changed. I also signed all the 61s from the shift, never left anything for the next tour. I guess you haven't had an XO that was livid about DIRs being lost or not being done so it falls on the desk or patrol supervisor to make sure they are handed in. Maybe things have changed, but that is they way I remember it.

That's my point, it's not going to be a straight 12 like cops are doing because you still have all the supervisor shit you have to do. Probably a 12:30 shift like you said. I also haven't been on patrol in a long time, but 12 hours doesn't sound fun on patrol.

Agreed. Problem is this doesnt affect the Board.
1) they do not supervise anyone and do not have to worry about getting jammed up or indicted for a decision made in the field
2) none of them are making $97k
So they would rather fight for a 10% pay differential for tours (that goes in their pocket as well) for a tour they will NEVER work. They are fighting for what they want and not representing the Union as a whole Shame!

I was told 10 hour tours the pay disparity is not going to be addressed and % only for our raise. All current SGT will stay on their respective steps. I hope this is wrong because if this is true then its time to start Emailing/Calling this joke of an SBA office every day about requesting new representation. How do you leave half the rank out to dry like that.

We might have enough to vote it down if thats true. It only needs a majority to pass. Theres well over 1500 that the pay disparity directly affects. Then theres always some who vote down contracts that sellout the unborn based on principle, they will have our backs. We will only need to get a few hundred more on our side to secure a majority.
So be prepared if they do not fix the pay disparity we will need to protest outside the SBA office. Notify the press of our plan to protest. We will need to make noise. Demand it be voted down. Demand better leadership. Demand transparency, lets start looking at why the board was oblivious to funds missing under their noses.
Be ready to make noise if we need to. Because there is no way I will stay silent if every new Sgt for the next 4 years will be at 118 and I am stuck at 96. if this board cannot fix this, then that is pathetic and a clear sign we need new leadership.

Dear Fellow Sergeant,
The SBA is pleased to announce that Sergeant Special Assignment Michael B. Daly of the Intelligence Bureau has been named the new Director for the Detective Bureau.
Michael was appointed to the former Transit Police Department in July 1988 and promoted to Sergeant in May 2000 and SSA in December 2019.
He has a rich history of dedication and commitment to the SBA, having served as an Alternate Delegate and Delegate since 2004, and is a welcome addition to the Board
This is whats wrong with the union and the board. Appointing a guy to the board who has 35 years on and probably hasnt seen a precinct since the early 2000s. Now he may be a great guy a great boss and someone you want in your corner. But do you think for one second hes concerned about guys getting shafted by the pay disparity? Tier 3 troubles? Precinct level problems. Not for one second. Just another guy whose far removed from reality and hasnt had a shit day in a long time.

That's my point, it's not going to be a straight 12 like cops are doing because you still have all the supervisor shit you have to do. Probably a 12:30 shift like you said. I also haven't been on patrol in a long time, but 12 hours doesn't sound fun on patrol.
*claps hands* Well said!

How do you leave half the rank out to dry like that.
another reason to get promoted asap
Sigh, two polar opposite contract rumors in the space of a week. Guess its about time for SBA to send a dont believe what you hear email. (Hi, fellas.) I did get the one about getting 15% off a Citizen watch, so theres that.
This is exhausting. And yeah, whatever gets put forward will go through, cant beat the *I got mine* mentality.

Any reason to spend our union dues on themselves is a good enough reason. Enjoy your next tour on patrol, but dont expect to see them out there. By the way, there is a fire sale on SBA cufflinks!
Email does not work with these assholes. I have sent them multiple emails, they never respond back.
Just another guy whose far removed from reality and hasnt had a shit day in a long time.
so the guy that works in Intel is now the Director of the DB?
Yeah. That makes no sense.
The Sba is proud to appoint someone who is surely aging out in the next three years to a position of prominence. He made sgt 23 years ago and was hired 35 years ago. Im sure hes a fine chap to share some suds with but he doesnt possibly have any idea.
Another great move by the SBA. If this doesnt cause some confusion to Sgts still making 22 grand less then recently promoted sgts and 10 grand less then top pay cops, not sure what to tell ya.
Get these mooks out.
Fraternally,
The uncle
