What class (or classes) is everyone taking?

Just curious on the classes that all you boys and girls are using this time around.

My boss told me to take elite if I want to be entertained but Rising Star if I want to pass! Lol
I'm taking it seriously this time and reputation matters. Going with Rising Star in January.

I feel Elite has the largest variety of ways to study... Powerpoints, aps on the phone.. His packets are good and all his classes are filmed, plus he puts together tri-mester exam. The key packets go to some really weird places and are tricky their classes are shorter than elites. Rising star questions seem to be overall the best IMO.

I don't think which class you take will dictate whether or not you will pass.

Me and my friends would love to take elite but classes start too early in the morning ... doesn't work for a 4x12 schedule.

And I agree, which class you take has very little impact on if you'll pass or not.

I'm sticking with eze/rising star for this one and also the new school blueline leaders guys. Both of the owners of that new company know their stuff..plus the $99 price tag for thousand of questions is a good deal

Blue line leaders? Is this a reincarnation of that patrolguidequestions.com a few years ago? Their questions sucked! Lol
They are around for like 2 exams 5-6 years ago. You did questions online and they ranked you against the others. I

I can assure you that this is NOT the same owners or material as the patrolguidequestions.com. Bluelineleaders is a new NYPD Patrol Guide supplement that provides over 2,000 multiple choice questions for ALL promotional exams for only $99. Bluelineleaders is not meant to replace one of the other classes that teaches the Patrol Guide but is there to provide you with additional Patrol Guide questions and help you focus on the sections you are doing the worst in.

Read the Patrol Guide, Essential Guide, Elite Guide or whatever you choice to do. But also, do as many questions as you can to truly test your knowledge of the material.

Originally I was going to go with Elite. HOWEVER, his classes are NOT 4x12 friendly. He starts at 8am so now I'm going with the more 4x12 friendly option (risingstar) which starts at 9:30am. Besides, Yanosik is too money hungry for my liking.

Hey if money is what drives Yano to provide the best class and beat out the competition that's fine by me. Money is what is driving me to get promoted, nothing to be ashamed of. No other instructor is on his energy level and I love it, he keeps you awake, motivated, and focused. Elite Is a great class but hey, whatever instructor you personally like the best is the way to go. It comes down to how much effort you put in anyway, not the teacher or class.

Yano has energy but you pay him so he can tell you the obvious. Rising Star goes a little deeper I think. The quality is really that much better. Garbage is garbage no matter how artfully you package it. Content is everything

No opinion one way or the other really. Just that if I'm paying for class material I don't want them pointing out the obvious. I can read that on my own.  I want to be challenged. I want them to go deeper. i  understand why schools do that though, its safe and easy. but that's not what's going to get me promoted. I'm just hoping they also do the live course for the capts exam at this point. Lol

You hit the nail on the head.

800.00 is nothing compared to the money you will make if you get promoted. Mike has a ton of different ways to study.

I used Elite for the 2015 exam and passed. I did not attend class (except to get my binders). I paced myself at 1 section a week.

This was my routine:

Read Elite guide 1 section per week. I divided the amount of sections by seven days and then I would read those select procedures 4-5 times in that day. After reading all the sections I started doing the packet. I then did questions and cross word puzzles. I would then do the weekly assessment on the lms. As well as the interactive learning modules.  Last step would be to do questions on the LMS.

IMO  the key is all over the place.  I can't deal with the packets with lines all over the place.  The key charges close to what Yanosik charges but they in no way have the same amount of methods to study.

Hopefully this is helpful for you guys.

My money is with rising star on this one. yes, their questions are great, but their new essential guide is awesome. Also got back from their one day cram today. $60 and they gave me back my money for signing up for lieutenant. The instruction was great. Awesome stuff and I've never been  psyched for a test like this.

I had had failures and thought I was gonna get fired from this job. Lol. Though I was gonna die on sgt list and have to take one again (looong story. Lol). anyway, watch out cause I'm gonna hit this test hard!

When the exams are crossword puzzles and fill in the blanks then I'll do elite. Until then, give the material in the same format ill see on exam day. pen and paper. The elite guide is a waste of time IMHO. The pics of the ranks? and restating the obvious in boxes? Listen, regardless of how you study you will pass. But, do you want to learn the same amount in 2 hours or 6 hours? If you like to spend more time to learn the same amount, then by all means go with elite.

just my 2 cents

Both RS and the key for me.

The Key's packets are the best:

1. they decipher everything into plain english and connect procedures to paint the bigger picture.

2. they're all over the place because they're designed to look like actual notes!

3. excellent to use as a review/re-cap or simply to decipher long/complicated procedures like CIMS.

4. The Key packets are good by themselves since they cover the meat and potatoes of the PG. This is good the cops who have family to tend to.

5. The key has George Mifsud. Nuff said.

Elite strategic

Yanosik is arrogant and greedy. Yes I said it. He's very enthused, energetic and very intelligent but thats about it. I feel like he's trying to do too much by himself.

Risingstar

PURE PATROL GUIDE and is for advanced learners/readers. This is top shelf, alpha male sh1t. Those cops who are willing to dedicate LOTS OF time to reading and disecting the PG will REAP THE BENEFITS OF RISINGSTAR. IMO you get the most out of RS by:
1. Going at your own pace.
2. studying with a partner and/or asking them questions from the packets.
3. Doing the RS questions alone can be very discouraging lol. You need to isolate yourself by putting in ear plugs and listen to yourself read the words.

From what I can gather from your posts in this forum, you are currently a PO studying for SGT, meaning you haven't yet passed a single test.  Knock it off.

Negative.. you knock it off. I dont need to take a test to give MY PERSONAL review on the classes. I have experience with all three: I'm actively signed up with both RS and THE KEY (been studying for close to a year). I have buddies in my squad who use elite. One of the guys in my squad was in elite and on the first day got turned away at the door because the classes were too crowded. (I posted about this months ago    http://risingstarpromotion.activeboard.com/t61503156/elite-strategic/)

My buddy was pissed and emailed yanosik about the situation. Yanosik apologized but basically told him (via email) to suck it up. Left a bad taste in his mouth so he decided he wanted a refund. Yanosik tells him he would process right away. Never happened

A week goes by and my buddy emails yanosik again. Yanosik responds saying that in order to get his money back, he wants the elite patrol guide returned because (in his own words) "I dont want anyone in possession of my material that doesn't want to be apart of my school". My buddy responded that he never received the PG because he was never able to attend the first day of class... like seriously?!

A couple more days go by and no reponse from Yanosik, so my buddy had to file a compliant via Paypal to get his money back.

With your low post count and your research/investigation into my post history- I wonder who you work for?disbeliefno

I can't comment on their essential guide bc I know nothing about it. Is it similar to the elite guide or is it a cliff notes of a patrol guide with certain ranks redacted? For example is the captains duties redacted for the LT exam course?

The Essential Guide is the Patrol Guide, word-for-word, except:

-All the ranks above captain and other unnecessary actors (like operations, personnel, etc) have been redacted.

-It contains acronyms, tips, breakdowns, examples, etc.

-Most procedures also have "takeaways" at the end of the procedure where the key points are summarized.

-Department forms which are in bold in the actual patrol guide along with the PD numbers next to them have been unbolded and the numbers taken away so it's not distracting. Also,

-The "fluff" unnecessary/unimportant items have been faded gray. You can still read it, but it's more subtle. e.g. statements like "be courteous" "write legibly" etc have been faded gray. How can anyone get these things wrong? It's so common sense they can't possibly trick anyone.

Students get a hard copy of the Essential Guide with binder and tabs as well as digital access where you can highlight/take notes.

During the actual classes, each section of the Essential Guide will be further edited; this time to just include lieutenant and below duties and more tips and notes specific to the 2017 Lieutenant exam.

All you have to know about me is I'm 2 for 2 on these exams, Thank You Mr. Yanosik! Listen, no personal attack intended here, I'm just saying- the opinion of what's the best cookbook from someone who has never cooked before is pretty worthless.  Maybe you should get off the Lieutenant forum for a little and go study to try to be a Sergeant.

We all you knew you loved Elite, who cares. I love RS and the The key and think Elite SUCKS.. WHO CARES!

Just seems odd that a "supervisor" making a salary of 150k took the time to research my posts to determine my rank. Other people in this thread gave opinions abt other schools; did you research their posts and call them out (perhaps you did under a diff name)? Whether you did or not I could care less but for some odd reason you singled me out.

So yes it is a personal attack (on your part) and I will post in ANY forum I want until eze says otherwise.

Must suck you cant apply your rank to an internet forum.

 Have you taken Yanosik's course?

Crossword puzzles are a way to break up the monotony. I don't attend his class bc what he does in 1 class I can do on my own at my place without some dumb ass (student) complaining about how he doesn't study and checks his Facebook posts.

Fill in the blanks helped me bc it required me to read the whole procedure. Just giving my opinion and experience. Passed 2 tests first time each and Yanosik helped me on this past exam. The guy was always there to help

Yes, for the study at home students. Regular students will get it in class. Also, Watchdox will be updated within 24-48 hours of a new Interim Order coming out.

When I went to pick up my stuff yesterday, it looked awfully quiet. I wonder if less people will be taking this test or if it is just very early on.

How many people were there? I suspect its Rising Star entering the live class arena and taking a piece of the business. The other schools can't be too happy about that.

Rising star actually had the operations orders for the last test. They didn't tell people to study it though. They just said "we highly recommend you look over these ops orders"  sure enough every single one they asked was in that packet.

I signed up 2 weeks ago and I'm perusing the digital Essential Guide. Awesome stuff. I'm excited...but not too excited. Gonna save my energy for 2nd week of January.

They covered the judgement section a while ago and sure enough it was on the test. Same thing with the crime classification. Their weak link before was not having a guide, but now they do. No doubt they are going to eat into the other school's business. Even with just the mail order stuff before they were head and shoulders above all the other schools.

I didn't stay for the whole orientation, I just picked up my stuff and left but I was there for about 10 minutes at the time it was supposed to start and I only saw 6 people.

For what it's worth, I used every school out there at some point - some are now looooong gone. IMHO, Rising Star was always spot on with their material and constantly updated with virtually zero mistakes. If you're a serious studier, it's the only way to go. I've gotten to know Ed & Tony over the years and aside from being decent humble guys, they are dead serious and passionate about the study process and the stuff they put out for others (ever notice the other schools don't advertise the list numbers that their teachers achieved?). Knowing what I know, now that they have live classes they will be the best and only school out there for those who can handle being challenged and pushed. If you want easy (and sometimes flawed) questions and a false sense of confidence, go to the other schools and waste your time & money.

I'm taking Elite again.
When I went to pick up my stuff yesterday, it looked awfully quiet. I wonder if less people will be taking this test or if it is just very early on.

How many people were there? I suspect its Rising Star entering the live class arena and taking a piece of the business. The other schools can't be too happy about that.

I didn't stay for the whole orientation, I just picked up my stuff and left but I was there for about 10 minutes at the time it was supposed to start and I only saw 6 people.

That Elite guide is a joke. It is seriously dumb. He points out the most obvious things, like REMEMBER: "you check the reports for the PREVIOUS 24 hours"! No kidding! I thought you would check the crime reports for the next 24 hours--before they happen. lol

Also the IO's are confusing as hell. There are no more interim order ink changes since they are automatic now with the online PG. It seems he got lazy (or hasn't gotten around to) editing it.

Like I said, it may work for some. But it took me double or triple the time to learn the material.  Just go to his site and check out his sample lessons. Check out his desk officer video learning for a good laugh.

I'm just glad I don't have to study again for this test

Your bashing his elite guide but according to my knowledge he is the originator of such a guide that gives more information unlike the original NYPD issued patrol guide.

Interm order ink changes. ...please explain?

Mike updates his elite guide via watchdox with 24-48 hrs of any change. He doesn't do ink changes. For his printed Elite guide he makes a pdf file of the procedures with the new changes.....you print them out and place it in your binder. When the cutoff date is announced he has a shrink wrapped packet with all the changes since his elite guide was printed. So you tear out the ones you printed and put in the new updates.

Desk officer video learning? Do you mean the interactive learning modules? If so, they are another study aid you can use to enforce what you already should be reading via the elite guide.
