What a scam that pay scale is. I'd like to know the % of sergeants that are in that rank long enough to get to top pay.

Quite high, considering the long stretches between Lt exams. The last Lt exam was in 2006 prior to the one in 2011.

The one chart shows that top pay is in your 5th year, while the other says 4th year.  Which is it?  Can someone please explain?  Thanks.

You will reach top pay once u have completed your fourth year as a sergeant, which is the same as starting your fifth year in rank

i believe you are wrong sir....look at the salary chart! 5 steps, however the first one is entry so thats step 1. step 2 will be one year as sgt....step 3 will be 2 years....step 4 will be 3 years...and step 5 will be 4 years. I even asked my delegate this and he confirmed it since he is waiting for top pay as well.

Top pay starts when you complete your fourth year as a Sgt. Not sure what's so difficult to understand here.

Top pay is when you hit your 4 year anniversary. So, if you get promoted on 9/1/2014, you will hit top pay on 9/1/2018.

Sgt2be.....I don't understand how u don't understand what I wrote.....when I completed my 4th year as a sergeant I was at top pay.....if the chart is confusing then just look at your paycheck after you complete four years.....

no its not when u finish your 4th year.....its at your 4 year anniversary! theres a big big diffference. I got promoted may of 2012...i will be at top pay may 2016. if you complete 4 years as a sgt that means you will be going on to your 5th year for top pay which is not the case. 2012 to 2013 was my one year. 2013 to 2014 was my 2 years. 2014 to 2015 was my 3 years. 2015 to 2016 is my 4 year anniversary and my top pay!

Lol Bro seriously how did u pass the test to begin with? Two people on this forum on the captains list are telling you that upon completion of your fourth year as a sergeant then u will officially be at top pay....COMPLETION of four years coincides with the START of your fifth year

When I was hired, top pay was 5 years. I was hired January 20, 2004 and on January 20, 2009, I was at top pay. At the end of my 5th year (2009) I had made an entire year's worth at top pay.

So if someone says to you that top pay is in 5 years, you hit it ON your 5th year. And if the Sgt's top pay is 4 years (5 steps) then you hit it ON your 4th year. It's really pretty obvious when you look at the chart. 4+ years it says. As far as being on the Captain's list... you say that as if that means all Captains are smart. You haven't met enough if you think that's the case.

idk...ive spoken to my delegates about this. I am sure it is the way i described. Look at the sba website, it is 5 pay steps! first one is when you get promoted. Second is first anniversary....third is 2nd anniversary....fourth is 3rd anniversary....and fifth will be 4th anniversary as a sgt. I was promoted 2012(1st step). 2013 is my 1 yr(2nd step)....2014 is my 2 yr(3rd step)...2015 is my 3 yr(4th step)...2016 is my 4yr anniversary and i am at top pay

Based on the payscale chart, it's pretty clear that you should hit it ON your 4th anniversary as sgt2be says.

The only reason I can think of is that maybe they (elite) mean it takes 5 years because at the 4 year mark, yeah, your paygrade changes, but technically you haven't earned the amount they show in their own chart until a full year at top pay (year 4-5) has been completed...?

Wow. This thread is embarrassing. Wtf is so hard about understanding after having your Sgt shield for 4 years you hit top pay???? Who cares about steps. COMPLETE 4 years in rank and you will be at top pay as you enter your 5th year in rank.

Dude, your 4th anniversary is when YOU FINISH your 4th year in rank!

For you:

May 2012 - May 2013=1 year in rank

May 2013 - May 2014=2 years in rank

May 2014 - May 2015=3 years in rank

May 2015 - May 2016=4 years in rank= Top Pay!

You will be starting your 5th year in rank the day after you hit your 4th year anniversary.

ok ok...yes everyone is saying the same thing. You are all right. My one point is, top pay for cop is 5.5 years....but top pay sgt is not the same. You dont have to wait 5 completed years but rather 4th anniversary or as ppl have stated, start of your 5th year.

This conversation is mind boggling to me. I cannot believe some of the things I am reading. It's as if a bunch of crackheads took over the board.

What is so hard about comprehending "4 years to top pay"?

To use sgt2be as an example. He says he got promoted May 2012. To make things simpler, let's say he got promoted on May 1st, 2012.

May 1st 2012 to May 1st 2013 = 1 year completed. (not at top pay yet) Making $79763

May 1st 2013 to May 1st 2014 = 2 years completed. (not at top pay yet) Making $79984

May 1st 2014 to May 1st 2015 = 3 years completed. (not at top pay yet) Making $80147

May 1st 2015 to May 1st 2016= 4 years completed (you are still not at top) Making $81326

May 2nd 2016 and forward, congratulations you are now at top pay. Makin $98072

To put this in simple terms, you need to COMPLETE 4 FULL YEARS, before your top pay rate begins.

I just wasted 5 minutes of my life reading how some stupid sgt to be can not understand the simplest of concepts. IT IS 4 F**KING YEARS TO TOP PAY. Why is that so hard to understand. Besides, anyone who describes their totj as "I'm in my 5th, 9th or whatever year" is an idiot. If you're in your 5th year, you have 4 years on. Stop trying to make yourself sound like you have more time than you do.

The easiest way to remember the steps is that you'll be very poor for 4 years. This wait feels like forever, longer than waiting for top pay PO!
